Mission dachshund-spine-safety
Mission Briefing
Agent Otto here reporting from Dog Sitting Manchester mission control. I just returned from a very long orbit and now I am back to cruising at my optimal daily altitude; crumb level! I am shaped like a very handsome sausage dog, which is excellent for cuddles but risky for spines since one in four Dachshunds may develop intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). With Mum's help - and the loving guidance at Dog Sitting Manchester - I have a seven-step plan to keep my back space-worthy in every neighbourhood of Manchester.
Adjusts tiny astronaut helmet: "Buckle up my fellow dachshund dogstronauts. These IVDD-prevention tips are go for launch 🚀🐾"
Mission Log
✅ 1. Ramps: A Dachshund’s Best Friend
- No jumping from sofas, beds, or cars.
- Non-slip ramps or low steps keep us safe.
- Turn “Otto, NO!” into “Otto, GO!”
🏊 2. Swim Like a Super Seal
- Gentle swimming = strong spine without stress.
- Always wear a life jacket; keep swims short and sweet.
- Warm and dry afterwards for maximum cuddles.
Try K9 Swim!
💪 3. Low-Impact Workout Wonders
- Twice daily, 15–20-minute walks. Choose harness over collar for more even pressure.
- Balance exercises, try to get your talented dachshund to walk backwards: hold a treat in front of them and walk towards them— reward them after a few steps back!
- Controlled sit to stands for core strength.
- Fun, controlled play = maximum spine health!
🍽️ 4. Slim Sausage, Strong Spine
- Maintain a neat waistline. A sausage dog should not really be shaped like a sausage.
- Measure meals, choose lean treats.
- Remember: extra weight adds extra strain.
🏠 5. Home Safety, Otto-Approved
- Baby gates block stairs; place ramps at key spots.
- Soft landing zones and non-slip mats prevent slips.
- Always pick up Dachshunds with full-body support—no sausages stranded in mid-space!
🔍 6. Early Signs = Vet Visit ASAP
Watch for:
- Reluctance to play or climb, stiffness, wobbles, yelping.
- Immediate action: restrict movement, gentle carrying, go to vets.
- Regular check-ups = healthy, happy Dachshunds.
🐶 7. Friendly Play Protocols
- Calm, short play sessions with suitable dog friends.
- Avoid rough chases, excessive ball play, slippery floors.
- Gentle playtime = happier spines.
🌟 Mission Accomplished!
We Dachshunds may not leap like Labradors, but we soar up ramps, glide in pools, and get carried like royalty!
Remember: Ramps, not jumps. Walks, not leaps. Always support the whole sausage dog.
Wishes of infinite tail wags and a future full of safe adventures and endless cuddles!
Agent Otto, I've got your back! 🚀🐾
Until next time,
Otto 🐾
